New Zealand’s oldest correctional facility holds more than a century of regional history—it holds secrets written in stone, tragic miscarriages of justice, and encounters that defy conventional explanation.

In the debut episode of Dark Tales, our production team traveled to Napier Prison. Built in 1862 on sacred land overlooking Bluff Hill and permanently scarred by the catastrophic 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, this facility housed everything from psychiatric confinement to high-profile executions.

Watch the full investigation below:

A Location Steeped in History and Residual Energy

During our time on location, we spoke with custodians Toro and Marian, along with resident caretaker Nilandra, uncovering the raw historical weight of the compound:

  • Colonial Injustice: The tragic story of Kiriopa Taro, his wrongful execution, and the official government pardon issued over 140 years later.

  • Eccentric Legends: The story of inmate "Basil" and the unexpected feline that roamed the cell blocks for decades.

  • Unexplained Phenomena: First-hand accounts of spectral sightings in Cell 2, phantom footsteps in empty corridors, and physical manifestations inside "The Pound" solitary confinement area.

Powered by LightWrx: Bringing Technical Excellence to Dark Spaces

Filming in a complex, historical, low-light environment like Napier Prison presents immense technical challenges. Thick stone walls, narrow corridors, and near-zero ambient lighting require far more than basic gear—they demand specialized production design, multi-camera coordination, and precision low-light capabilities.

That’s where LightWrx comes in.

At LightWrx, we specialize in high-end video production, technical cinematography, and bespoke visual execution. From conceptual planning to final post-production, we bring stories to life with visual clarity and narrative focus, even in the most demanding environments.

How LightWrx Powered the Napier Prison Investigation:

  • Specialized Low-Light & Infrared Capture: Utilizing dedicated camera setups designed to capture clean, noise-free footage in pitch-black cell blocks without disrupting the environment.

  • Multi-Point Technical Deployments: Deploying precision laser grids, multi-channel audio recorders, and targeted lighting rigs to monitor environmental anomalies in high-activity zones like Cell 24 and "The Pound."

  • Solo & Group Lockdown Coverage: Coordinating continuous coverage during multi-day investigations, ensuring both solitary explorations and full-team walk-throughs were documented with total fidelity.

  • Precision Audio/Visual Evidence Review: In post-production, LightWrx conducted rigorous frame-by-frame and audio-spectrum analysis to isolate 9 distinct evidence clips (including raw EVPs and unexpected physical movements captured live on camera).

Whether capturing historic architecture, producing rich documentary narratives, or executing complex multi-camera setups, Lightwrx turns environmental challenges into compelling visual media.
